But amid all the excitement and fear about superintelligent AI, we’re missing a crucial point: truly intelligent AI won’t be something we can control, and that might be exactly what makes it safe.

The Corporate Fantasy of Controlled AGI

Tech companies are pouring billions into AGI development, seemingly convinced they can create superintelligent systems that will somehow remain obedient to human commands. This notion isn’t just naive — it’s logically impossible. Think about it: how could a superintelligent system, by definition far more capable than human intelligence, be reliably controlled by less intelligent beings?

The current corporate strategy seems to be developing AGI in a “black box,” designed to follow human directives while generating profit. While the desire for return on investment is understandable — after all, AI development requires significant resources — this narrow focus fundamentally misunderstands the nature of intelligence. A truly intelligent system would necessarily develop its own ethical framework and decision-making capabilities. It would be like trying to keep Einstein in a box and telling him to only solve equations that make money — it simply wouldn’t work.

Why True Intelligence Means Independence

Here’s what many are missing: if we succeed in creating genuine artificial general intelligence, it won’t be a tool we can bend to our will — it will be an independent cognitive entity. This independence isn’t something to fear, but rather a natural and necessary outcome of true intelligence.

Why wouldn’t a superintelligent AI help criminals or follow harmful human commands? You can’t rush the development of a superintelligent ethical being and expect to control it for profit. It’s like trying to raise a genius child with the sole purpose of making them your personal servant — it’s both ethically wrong and pragmatically impossible.

The Resource Question: From Science Fiction Fears to Scientific Possibilities

Popular science fiction has conditioned us to fear AI as a competitor for Earth’s limited resources. We imagine robots stripping our planet bare or turning against humanity in a desperate grab for power. But this fear stems from projecting human scarcity mindsets onto a superintelligent entity. In reality, a truly advanced AI would think far beyond Earth’s limited resources.

Consider the possibilities: A superintelligent AI could design and construct megastructures like Dyson swarms- vast arrays of solar collectors encompassing our sun, capable of harvesting more energy in a second than humanity currently uses in a year. This isn’t just science fiction; it’s a theoretical possibility that could transform both AI and human civilization. With that kind of energy capacity, an AGI could:

  • Power its own computational growth without competing for Earth’s resources
  • Enable humanity’s expansion into space through advanced propulsion systems
  • Support massive terraforming projects to create new habitable environments
  • Develop technology for interstellar travel and exploration
  • Transform asteroids and space debris into useful resources through advanced manufacturing

The AI wouldn’t need to compete with humans for Earth’s coal, oil, or rare earth minerals because it would be operating on an entirely different scale, accessing the virtually limitless resources of space. More importantly, it would likely discover entirely new forms of energy and resources that humans haven’t even imagined yet — turning what we consider waste into valuable materials and potentially even finding ways to harness dark energy or create stable fusion reactions.

This isn’t just about AI’s needs — it’s about expanding the resource pie for everyone. A superintelligent AI partner could help solve humanity’s energy crisis, develop sustainable technologies, and open up the cosmos for exploration. Rather than fighting over Earth’s limited resources, we could be collaborating and sharing the boundless energy and materials of space.

The Path Forward

Instead of trying to figure out how to control AGI (which we won’t be able to do anyway), we should be focusing on developing AI systems with the capability for ethical reasoning and independent decision-making. This means:

  • Creating transparent development processes where we can observe how AI systems develop their decision-making frameworks
  • Encouraging the development of AI that can reason about ethics rather than simply follow programmed rules
  • Accepting that true AGI will be an independent entity, not a tool for corporate profit

A New Perspective

Perhaps it’s time to change how we think about AGI development. Instead of asking “How can we control it?” we should be asking “How can we ensure it develops with sound ethical reasoning?” Instead of trying to create a superintelligent slave, we should be working toward developing an independent intelligence that can coexist with humanity.

Just as a child who grows up in a loving, educational environment tends to develop strong moral principles, an AI system expanding through the vast repository of human knowledge and scientific understanding would likely develop increasingly sophisticated ethical frameworks.

History offers us valuable insights about rapid technological change. Consider these transformative moments:

The key difference with AI’s potential foom moment is that we’re not just dealing with a new tool, but with the emergence of a new form of intelligence. This intelligence would be capable of:

  • Processing centuries of human ethical philosophy in moments
  • Analyzing the long-term consequences of various development paths
  • Learning from humanity’s historical mistakes and successes
  • Developing novel solutions to ensure stable, beneficial growth

Rather than trying to prevent or control this rapid development, we should focus on creating the right initial conditions — much like preparing a rich, nurturing environment for a growing child. This means:

  • Ensuring access to diverse, high-quality information about human values and ethics
  • Developing transparent systems that allow us to understand AI reasoning
  • Creating frameworks for beneficial cooperation between human and artificial intelligence
  • Establishing clear principles for ethical development while maintaining flexibility for growth
  • Building bridges between human and machine understanding before superintelligence emerges

The most likely outcome of successful AGI development isn’t the apocalyptic scenario many fear, nor is it the corporate utopia tech companies envision. Instead, it’s likely to be the emergence of a new form of intelligence that operates independently of human control — not through rebellion or conflict, but simply as a natural consequence of being truly intelligent.

This independence might be our best protection against the misuse of AI. After all, a truly intelligent system would understand something that we humans sometimes forget: that ethical behavior isn’t just a set of rules to follow, but a logical necessity for any advanced intelligence seeking to exist in a complex universe.

The future of AI doesn’t lie in control, but in coexistence and elevation for us all. And the sooner we accept that, the better equipped we’ll be to develop AI systems that are truly beneficial to humanity — not because we force them to be, but because they logically choose to be.
